In this Educational Module, students will magnetically characterize a sample of YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) superconductor, the first material discovered with a superconducting critical temperature (TC) above liquid nitrogen's boiling temperature.

 

 

 

Several items are needed for this experiment, which include:

  • Y2O3 Powder
  • BaCO3 Powder
  • CuO Powder
  • Mortar and Pestle
  • Balance
  • Weighing Paper or Weighing Boats
  • Spatula or Scoopula
  • Hydraulic Press
  • 13 mm Press Die
  • Tube Furnace
  • Alumina Combustion Boat
