In this Educational Module, students will characterize the resistive properties of a sample of Fe3O4, more commonly known as magnetite. The primary emphasis will be to observe the Verwey transition, which is a structural phase transition accompanied by charge ordering.
Several items are needed for this experiment, which include:
- Magnetite sample
- Silver paint
- Silver paint applicator
- 25 micron diameter Pt or Au wire
- Apiezon N grease or GE7031 varnish
- Weighing or cigarette paper
- Tweezers
- Microscope
- Scissors
- Lighter
- Soldering iron
