In this Educational Module, students will characterize the resistive properties of a sample of Fe3O4, more commonly known as magnetite. The primary emphasis will be to observe the Verwey transition, which is a structural phase transition accompanied by charge ordering.

 

 

 

Several items are needed for this experiment, which include:

  • Magnetite sample
  • Silver paint
  • Silver paint applicator
  • 25 micron diameter Pt or Au wire
  • Apiezon N grease or GE7031 varnish
  • Weighing or cigarette paper
  • Tweezers
  • Microscope
  • Scissors
  • Lighter
  • Soldering iron
