Superconductivity is an exciting phenomenon whereby certain materials at low temperatures demonstrate zero electrical resistance and the expulsion of magnetic field, also known as the Meissner effect. In this lab, students will synthesize and electrically characterize their own polycrystalline samples of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) superconductor, the first material discovered with a superconducting critical temperature (TC) above liquid nitrogen’s boiling temperature (77 K).
