Discovery Teaching Labs - Heat Capacity of Magnetite

Heat Capacity of Fe3O4 (Magnetite)
PPMS® VersaLab®

In this Educational Module, students will measure the heat capacity of Fe3O4, more commonly known as magnetite. This material undergoes a structural phase transition that can be observed in both its electrical transport and magnetic properties. The primary emphasis will be to characterize this "Verwey transition," the underlying physics of which continues to be studied to this day.

Several items are needed for this experiment, which include:

  • Magnetite sample or powder
  • Balance
  • Weighing or cigarette paper
  • Apiezon N grease
  • Microscope
  • Tweezers
